$120,000+ in Grants Approved

The Board of Directors of the East Montgomery County Improvement District approved funding nine requests for Community Development Grants (CDG) totaling $123,572.50 at its May 14 meeting. Grants are funded twice a year to governmental entities, non-profit corporations and other organizations for projects that improve the quality of life for residents in East Montgomery County.

Applicants must have at least 33 percent matching funds for their projects.

Recipients of the Spring 2015 CDGs are: City of Roman Forest, City of Roman Forest Police Department, East Montgomery County Historical Society, East Montgomery County YMCA of Greater Houston, Mission Northeast, Montgomery County Youth Services, New Caney New Horizons, Inc., Splendora Junior High School AV Club, and the Splendora Junior High School Science Club.

The Board voted to send two applicants’ grant requests to the Fall 2015 CDG cycle; one request was rejected because it did not meet the requirements.

Checks will be presented to the organizations at the Board’s June 24 meeting.

Grants

East Montgomery County Historical Society – $11,000
Grant funds will be used to pay Entergy for the cost of moving the power line easement from the center of the EMCHS property to the south property line. Mission Northeast – $49,010.50
Grant funds will pay for a freezer/cooler combination unit along with safety items so that the Mission Northeast can accept additional donations to continue to provide social services for those who are in need. They provide services to 22,000 individuals on an annual basis.

Montgomery County Youth Services – $6,000
Grant funds would sponsor a minimum of 27 youth, ages 7-17 from East Montgomery County, for the 2015 Camp Watsitumi. The summer therapeutic camp offers physical activities on a challenge course that is geared to enhance problem solving, communication and teamwork.

New Caney New Horizons, Inc. – $28,712

Grant funds will be used to start an AV club for the 2015 fall semester and to purchase audio/visual equipment to provide the school staff with the necessary resources to create and publish media related to their course content.

Splendora Junior High School Science Club – $4,000
Grant funds will help support the club’s goal of raising student engagement during their learning experience by acquiring resources for club lab activities, underwriting regional and state level science fair research and participation and allow for large scale student awareness campaigns.
